For all intents and purposes, the standard depth recommendation of sharp sand with concrete is about 1-inch. However, the thickness of the sharp sand is most important, and you should ensure that the sand is laid to a thickness of about 30-40mm in depth before you start mixing in concrete.
Leveling sharp sand can be tricky, therefore it is best to use a four to six-inch rip of plywood attached to a two by four of equal length to ensure stability. Drag the sand, making sure that you have some grade stakes in place for your desired height, and presto, you end up with a smooth surface to lay your stone on.
